Barclays Life Skills case study 1

Overview

The workshop brought financial literacy to life in a meaningful and relatable way through a range of scenarios and hands-on tasks. Over the course of the session, pupils explored topics including managing bills, budgeting, interpreting payslips, understanding tax codes and National Insurance, and navigating financial products such as bank accounts, overdrafts, credit cards, and credit scores.

An income and expenditure worksheet exercise helped the young people to evaluate the impact of lifestyle decisions on savings and overall financial wellbeing.

Results and effectiveness

By the session close, pupils had gained:

  • An improved understanding of financial processes, such as salaries, tax and National Insurance.
  • Greater confidence in real-life financial tasks, including interpreting payslips, choosing financial products, and planning for living expenses.
  • Awareness of financial responsibility and how to balance essentials and non-essentials such as bills, food, transport, leisure and savings.

Additional benefits

The skills gained during the workshop were beneficial to all pupil participants, regardless of their post-school pathway.
