Portlethen Academy Career Insight Session

Overview

Small cluster groups of pupils chatted in an informal and relaxed way with industry representatives who are working in careers that are of interest to them.

As well as helping them to hone their plans for life beyond school, the session also supported the development of the pupils' confidence and communication skills. These skills are valued by employers and are therefore important preparation for entering the world of work.

Results and effectiveness

Careful preparatory work contributed to the value of this session. School data was used to determine which industries should be represented; this was then categorised further to define specific business areas and careers. Pupils also attended a session in advance to build their networking confidence and abilities, and prepare relevant questions.

The overall objective of the session was to provide pupils with a meaningful insight into their chosen career pathway. Feedback from pupils indicated that 92% of those who participated felt that it had improved their knowledge of the world of work.

Additional benefits

Pupils who were unsure of their future pathway received career planning guidance from Skills Development Scotland. The session helped them to consider their strengths and interests, and supported them with the process of setting career goals.

“It was very informative and gave me great insight into my future in university and work”.
