Welcome to the first edition of The Desk, a brand-new blog written by me, Phillip Wood - Digital Marketing Modern Apprentice for DYW Moray and DYW North East.
I am 19 years old and I live in Keith, Moray. I attended Keith Grammar School from 2013 until 2019.
Whilst at school, I enjoyed Administration, Geography, English, History, and Art. During my time at Keith Grammar School, from 2018, I undertook a Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills at Moray College UHI and at Gordon and MacPhail’s Head Office in Elgin, Moray. My Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills educated me in many aspects of business, in word and data processing, gave me a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, provided valuable office experience, and gave me a variety of skills.
When I was at Keith Grammar School, Administration was one of my favourite subjects and I was awarded the Jelf Clark Thomson Insurance Brokers Ltd Prize for Administration in S6.
Until 2020, I also provided administrative support to the Royal Voluntary Service On-Ward Volunteer Coordinator of Dr Gray’s Hospital.
After completing my secondary education, I searched and applied for various positions in an office environment and where I would carry out administrative duties. However, as I had not secured this type of role, I was happy to begin gainful employment at Walker’s Shortbread Ltd in Aberlour, Moray as a Factory Operative in November 2019 and worked seasonally until December 2020.
Outside of my working life, I enjoy the great outdoors, watching television and sport, spending time with my family and socialising with my friends.
I was very pleased to be offered the position of Digital Marketing Modern Apprentice for DYW Moray and DYW North East in May 2021, as working in an office environment and carrying out administrative duties is what I have wanted to do since completing my secondary education in 2019. I am also very grateful to have secured a position during a time where there have been far fewer employment opportunities that are suitable for young people.
Having previously undertaken a Foundation Apprenticeship, I had a slight idea of what a Modern Apprenticeship might involve. Moving forward, I am positive and hopeful that my Modern Apprenticeship in Digital Marketing will increase my skills in all areas, give me the experience that all employers are looking for, and, ultimately, lead to a successful career doing something that I enjoy.
